They spend hours on simulated work tasks, several with tight deadlines. They complete a lengthy survey, where they rank their interest in chores such as fixing a leaky faucet and changing the fax machine's toner. Some prospects walk out right after the all-day screening starts.

The process "is sometimes a little rough around the edges," but Melissa & Doug hires only individuals "who will love it here," says co-CEO Doug Bernstein. He and his wife founded a firm where sales staffers often interrupt work to belt out songs using the office karaoke machine. Melissa & Doug can afford to be picky. About 50 people now apply for every position the company fills, 10 times as many as two years ago, according to Mr. Bernstein.

View Full Image

                 Jason Schneider

urn persists, U.S. employers flooded with résumés increasingly insist that job hunters jump through unusual hoops. An investment bank ordered an experienced female marketer to come dressed in fancy evening wear suitable for entertaining wealthy clients. Certain businesses ce contenders to interview each other and tout their rival's prowess. Others demand protracted unpaid tryouts.

"Job seekers frequently face a process that makes the Spanish Inquisition seem tame" because management sees the sour economy as a golden opportunity "for upgrading talent," says Jennifer Berman, a Chicago human-resources consultant.

Anyone craving employment these days "should expect just about anything," says Tom Carter, president of LeaderFinder Consulting Inc., a New York executive recruiter. He recently began requiring prospects to ace a role-playing exercise before recommending them to clients.

However, there are ways to anticipate and handle unorthodox screening tactics so you don't get knocked out of the running while jogging that extra mile.

You may avoid surprises by digging deeper than usual. Ask present and prior staffers about a company's hiring regimen, before checking online chatrooms and the corporate Web site for extra clues.

Capital One Financial Corp. alerts potential professionals and managers that many will tackle a business case study during interviews. The big bank's Web site offers a sample case study and acceptable analysis. Candidates believe "it's extremely helpful to have that case-study preparation," says Tonya L. Swatzyna, senior director of recruiting.

Rehearsals also get you ready for curveball interview requests. Act out responses to standard queries with friends, and then "have them ask you crazy questions to catch you off guard," says Townley Paton, owner of InterviewClips. The small San Francisco concern produces multimedia résumés for job hunters. You will appear even more self-confident if you practice your breathing, eye contact and smile, Mr. Patton adds.

Thinking fast on your feet helps, too. That's how a candidate became the frontrunner for a vice presidency at a midsize biotechnology company. During the prospect's interview with the company's chief executive last month, the CEO insisted the woman attend a corporate meeting about pitching for a contract research assignment.

Her participation "was totally unplanned," says Jay Meschke, president of CBIZ Executive Search, a CBIZ Inc. unit that helped the biotech concern field candidates. The woman offered impressive ideas about how the biotech business might craft the client pitch, according to Mr. Meschke. The firm will likely decide this month whether she will be its next VP of sales and marketing.

Daunting Hurdles

Some employers create hiring hurdles so daunting that their reputations suffer. A jobless executive sought to manage a large training department for a West Coast bank last year. The executive and seven fellow candidates were ushered into a crowded boardroom, where officials gave them each five minutes to interview the applicant next to them and offer a presentation on "why that person would be the best person for the job," he recalls.

The assignment infuriated the HR executive. "It's a total no win. You're put in a position of failure from the beginning," he says. The bank didn't hire him, but "never told me why I wasn't chosen," the spurned candidate adds.

Since then, the executive repeatedly has discouraged acquaintances from applying there. He hopes the bank hears about his criticism. "Why would I care about burning employment bridges at a place I don't want to work?" he asks.

Making the Most of It

Rather than retaliate, other job hunters take advantage of unconventional hurdles. Consider William "Tommy" Rollins, a digital marketing analyst laid off when Circuit City Stores Inc. liquidated in January. He soon met Brent Peterson, founder of InterviewAngel, a professional guide and toolkit offering interviewing tips in a binder. Mr. Peterson offered an unpaid tryout.

Mr. Rollins agreed to design free of charge an online sweepstakes where winners will receive a free copy of the guide, a résumé overhaul and a month of career coaching. If you aren’t yet on Linkedin(linkedin.com), you need to be! Think of it as MySpace for the work world. Join some groups that pertain to the type of job you’re looking for, and also mark your profile “in transition” so that folks know you’re looking for work.

12. Being a Recruiter, I definitely recommend working with us. But be aware of how things work, and use that to your advantage. Employers pay us to find them great candidates for their openings, which means we will only introduce the very best people for the position. Talk to Recruiters who work solely or mostly in the industry you work in- you’ll have a much better chance of matching up with their assignments, getting an interview (or several) and getting hired.

13. Be active online in your industry. Join online groups that are specific to your industry, and don’t be a wallflower. Talk to people, ask how they are doing, build relationships, offer advice when you can, even answer questions people might have on sites like Yahoo Answers or Web Answers. The idea is to get your name out there as someone who knows his stuff, so that they’ll call you when they need someone. (And do not imagine for a minute that your future employers will not Google your name before offering you a job.)

14. Government positions at all levels are in a major hiring frenzy. You can research and apply for federal government jobs at jobsearch.usajobs.gov/

15. The phone interview: this is a screening tool, not just a little chat to make an appointment! Be sure the dog isn’t barking, the baby isn’t crying, and you’re not making dinner while discussing your future. Give this as much attention as you would if you were in that office with the caller.

16. What’s in a name? Don’t be so stuck on the title of the job that you pass up the opportunity, If the work is interesting and pays okay, be willing to take a step back in that title to move forward.

17. Post your resume on the big sites: CareerBuilder and Monster. You can also apply online, and search related jobs. You will get emails from employers offering you positions, but make sure that your “Scam Alert” is working overtime if the position seems too good to be true.

18. Email everyone on your contact list and let them know what you’re looking for, career-wise.

19. Be open to the possibility of non-traditional hours or weekend work if necessary, at least at the beginning.

20. Show up early for every interview, every call, every follow up. You want to appear eager!

Check out my other articles for more tips, and also Check back on Tuesday for Part Three!
My blogs http://until2010.blogspot.com and http://denisegabbard.wordpress.com offer more information to help during this economy. This is the first effort made with the T.A.R.P. money that Main Street America can actually see. The government’s new foreclosure prevention plan is called Making Home Affordable. (M.H.A)

The government has set up a website specifically to give people who are struggling with their mortgage a place to get answers and help. Having considerable background in the mortgage and investment industries, I know that the bank's REO lists are completely free, so I did a quick search and came up with this list. This is a fairly comprehensive resource to get you started looking for a bargain property! If there is a local bank which does a lot of real estate lending, such as Third Federal in Cleveland, call them directly for a list of REO properties. They will be glad to send it!

REO, or Real Estate Owned, is property that failed to sale at a foreclosure auction and is now owned by a bank. Below is a free list of banks and links to their REO property.
Some links below lead directly to the lenders REO Department while other link to third party websites that provide REO services for the lender.
Countrywide REO:http://www.countrywide.com/purchase/f_reo.asp
Bank of America REO:http://bankofamerica.reo.com/search/
HSBC REO:http://www.banking.us.hsbc.com/
window.google_render_ad();
IndyMac Bank REO:http://apps.indymacbank.com/individuals/realestate/search.asp
Ocwen Financial REO:http://www.ocwen.com/reo/home.cfm
JP Morgan Chase Bank REO:http://mortgage.chase.com/pages/other/co_properties_landing.jsp
M&T Bank REO:http://services.mandtbank.com/personal/bank_owned_prop.cfm
Wells Fargo REO:https://www.pasreo.com/reo/
Washington Mutual REO (WAMU):http://www.wamuproperties.com
American Home Mortgage REO:They aren't taking mortgage applications anymore but they are selling real estate, go figure. ;)http://www.ahmhomes.com
Wachovia REO:http://reo.wachovia.com/
Washington Mutual REO: I could not locate any information about their REO.
Deutsche Bank REO: No information is available online.
SunTrust REO: SunTrust Mortgage, Inc website claims that all REO is listed with local real estate agents. Here are some tips that can help to make sure your bargain does not turn into a nightmare:

--Budget carefully. Be sure you have extra money set aside for extensive repairs if the house needs it, including paying a crew for labor and materials required.

--Do NOT buy sight unseen. Why would you even consider doing that? The risks are far too great, as many would-be investors have found out.

--Check out the neighborhood. You want to be sure the house isn't in a high crime area, or an area that's been hit particularly hard by foreclosure. Make several trips to the area, including at night, to see what the atmosphere is like.

--Find out how long it's been vacant. Long vacant properties have more damage in most cases. Plumbing seals dry out, pipes can break due to freeze and thaw cycles, sewer gases back up, and bugs that are in the sewer get a chance to get into the house.

--Don't turn on the utilities until you know the condition of the pipes. Besides causing a flood and damage to your walls, you could end up with mold.

--How is the landscaping? Make sure you don't have vines and tree roots growing into the house- they can cause extensive damage that you may not see initially.

--Get an inspection done- the cost is relatively inexpensive (I believe we paid about $400 for one when we bought our home in 2004) and very much worth the money. They can save you money in the long run if they can point out damaged pipes or electricity and you take pre-emptive action to get them repaired.

--Consider government owned REO's through HUD. They generally have been winterized and a condition report is done. There is also special financing available to buyers.

--Do not look for quick profits. With the economy and housing market the way it is, you may not be able to "fix and flip" as so many people did in the past. There are many houses going unsold on the market, so be sure you have the funds available to cover yourself in that event.

Five Healthy Motivational Books to Move YOU!

“Life is like riding a bicycle. To keep your balance you must keep moving" Albert Einstein

In times like these, it’s more important than ever to keep your balance! Here are five books to help with your personal balancing act:

1. The Blue Zones: Lessons for Living Longer From the People Who've Lived the Longest By Dan Buettner

Dan Buettner has an association with the National Geographic Society, and is familiar with many cultures around the world. He defines a “Blue Zone” as a geographic area that produces high rates of people living over 100 years. His talks with these people about their secrets to longevity reveal little that is secret. In fact, he finds that they just have naturally adopted healthy habits as a way of life. Some of them are obvious-lots of fresh water, fresh air, and exercise, and others aren’t so black and white. Nevertheless, Dan gives us a lot of insight into how they live, and how we can incorporate much of what they do into our new, longer lives, leaving us with nine main principles to consider and implement.

2. The End of Overeating: Taking Control of the Insatiable American Appetite by David Kessler, MD

A quick Google search on David Kessler, and you find out about a man who earned his law degree from the University of Chicago, while attending medical school at Harvard. He became FDA Commissioner, and led the fight against Big Tobacco, and also rolled out nutritional labeling. In this book, he goes even further, speaking out against the corporations that serve us highly processed, nutritionally lacking foods. Seems that since the 1980’s, processed food manipulation has risen tremendously, along with the average American’s weight! His book gives answers to why these foods have such control over us, and what we can do to change that dynamic so that we can eat the healthy, nutritious food that our bodies require for optimum health.

3. Always Looking Up: The Adventures of an Incurable Optimist by Michael J. Fox

Michael J. Fox rose to stardom as Alex Keaton in 1970’s series Growing Pains, and became a true “movie star” after driving the silver DeLorean “Back to the Future.” This book, however, shows how very human he is, and discusses the years of his life since Parkinson’s Disease created a major detour in the path that had been so certain. Michael deals with his progressive illness with grace, while always fighting back, and knowing that a cure is in sight. He maintains a positive attitude, humor, and optimism towards his illness, which is a lesson for us all to make the best of the situation we are dealt.

4. The 90-Second Fitness Solution: The Most Time-Efficient Workout Ever for a Healthier, Stronger, Younger You Pete Cerqua with Alisa Bowman, Contributor

The author owns and runs four gyms in NYC, and has been a fitness trainer for over 25 years. His program is both revolutionary and simple. Exercises are presented that can be done anywhere for a maximum of 90 seconds, with no workout clothes or special equipment. This plan can fit in the busiest lifestyle, and rave reviews say that it works!

5. Hungry Girl: 200 Under 200: 200 Recipes Under 200 Calories by Lisa Lillien

The latest in the Hungry Girl series, this book is chock full of recipes that are quick, easy, and under 200 calories! Many are modified, lower-calorie versions of restaurant foods, with lots of sweet-tooth satisfaction included.

Grace In Small things 14:365

1. When I was a young girl, I would write short stories and poems almost daily. As I grew up and decided it would be a really hard way to make a living (at least in the early '80's) I just stopped writing and started reading instead.

In today's world, it is so much easier for a writer to get started making a living. I guess I have to expand that to say it's probably easier for any business to get started, as far as being able to draw themselves publicity- many times for free!

Many people are going into business for themselves, out of necessity, in the current slump. Some have always wanted to, and being laid off afforded them the opportunity. Others are less enthusiastic converts, preferring the relative safety (now? I don't think so) of a 9 to 5 job.

I think that regardless of what path you choose at this point, the internet remains the present and future of marketing any business. So get to work learning all you can about who the experts are, what the best sites are for your particular interests, when and where you should advertise, and how do you put it all together into a marketing campaign that will drive traffic to your business, whether it's in cyberspace or brick and mortar.

http://www.blogcatalog.com/directory/lifestyle/living-well

Grace In Small Things 12:365

1.Getting closer to living in FLA permanently:) Testing for a govt. job on the 18th.

2.Lebron James is MVP of the NBA. People's perception of you is based mostlyon your physical appearance, and many people will assume so much about you—what do you want them to assume about YOU?

Many Career Coaches and Executive Recruiters, myself included,
believe interviewers and hiring authorities assume your personality, level of past success, education, and dependability based simply on how you look and present yourself.

Here are ten tips on making a GREAT first impression:

1. Take pride in how you look! Make sure your interview outfit shows a very professional side of you. For men, this generally means a dark suit, white dress shirt and coordinating tie with well polished dark shoes. Though women have much more leeway, you want your outfit to scream PROFESSIONAL. A nice, tailored suit, pantsuit, or even a very professional dress will fit the bill. Do not wear anything too tight, too short, too low cut-- anything that could be construed as the least bit sexy!

2. Absolutely essential is to make sure your clothing and shoes are in tip-top shape. Well-pressed, no stains, rips or tears, or badly scuffed soles. Even if it's necessary to purchase something new, or borrow from a friend, it will be worth it in the confidence boost it gives you!

3. Shouldn't even have to mention- but will: Good hygiene is imperative! Be certain to put your freshest face forward, including your minty-fresh breath. Men should be clean shaven, and any mustaches or beards should be neatly trimmed. Men's hair should be trimmed at or above the collar line, and make certain it's a professional-looking cut. (I had an otherwise perfect candidate rejected for a Sr. Acct. Exec. Position because he had, in the words of the Branch Manager, "Kramer hair" a la the Seinfeld show.) Ladies hair should be neat and in a professional style—and don't let it cover half your face.

4. Don't be extreme in anything! Ladies makeup should not be distracting, especially excessive eye shadow and lipstick. Your fingernails should be neatly trimmed and clean, with no wild designs or ultra-long nails. Minimal jewelry is plenty! One pair of earrings, a necklace, a watch, and two rings is plenty. Also, do not wear jewelry in any "non-traditional" places. I know that the fad nowadays is to pierce all your parts; you'll want to keep that side of you separate from business! No nose rings, lip rings, eyebrow rings, or earrings anywhere but the lobe.

5. Tattoos. I have three words: Cover them up! Many companies have a strict policy against visible tattoos, and the ones who don't probably also think they aren't very professional. So, unless you're Lebron James, you probably shouldn't flaunt your artwork at an interview.

6. Use your social skills! Be pleasant, shake hands politely and firmly, and SMILE! Project confidence, but not arrogance in your interview. Do not keep them waiting while you finish a cell phone call (would be funny if it hadn't really happened.) You will turn people off if they feel you are speaking down to them- so stay on their level.

7. Be careful of your body language. Did Mom ever tell you to sit up straight, get your elbows off the table, or watch your language? That's because she knew that people judge you by such things. So don't cuss like a sailor, slouch in your chair, or lean on the interviewer's desk. But do sit up straight and alert, making positive eye contact to show you are interested in what they have to say.

8. Show them your intelligence level by using proper English and a range of your vocabulary. Don't dominate the conversation, but don't sit silently in your seat. This is a two way interview- you need to find out enough about the company and the job offered to see if it's a good fit for you as well.

9. Ask questions! The company's agents expect you to be curious about the company and want to know more about it, and them. Do some preliminary research before-hand: check out the company website, look them up on Hoover's, even Google the names of the people you are going to see. This should give you plenty of questions, and maybe even some common interests to discuss.

10. Do not be negative about anything or anybody! If your last boss was a total moron, you need only say that you left to find a position which offered more opportunity. If there is something negative in your past, you do need to address it, but also tell them how you've corrected the problem since then.

Bottom-line, your ability to impress the interviewer with your vast knowledge of ABC Widgets is only as important as presenting yourself in a professional way. Do not let image hold you back when a few small tweaks will make you perfect!

Grace In Small Things 9:365

1.Our daughter and her boyfriend took my husband and I to a concert last night. Today he played in the sprinkler with the kids, licked peanut butter off their faces, and "helped" with their popsicles. Getting the attention of the hiring manager and getting that all important interview is more important now than ever.

Here are some smart tips for getting your foot in the door:

1. Apply for jobs you are qualified to do!
This may seem like a no brainer, but in my business as an Executive Recruiter, probably a full 50% of the resumes I get do not remotely qualify for the position advertised. Don't think that someone will save your resume and call you when they get your perfect job. More likely, they'll think you aren't so smart, and toss you in the round file. (If your intention is just to get your resume in their hands in case something else comes along, make that known to them.)

2.Make your accomplishments stand out on your resume!
The old format of Objective, Experience, Education doesn't work well in today's fast-paced world. Most recruiters will scan a resume for ten seconds at most-- that's how long you have to grab their attention. So skip the objective, and put a list of accomplishments at the top, right below your name and phone number! This is not the time to be modest. Think of your resume as a sales flyer, and YOU are the product you're selling!

3.Make sure your resume can get past the "robot" screeners!
Many companies today use automated screeners- computer programs that look for specific keywords from the job description. Go through the job description thoroughly, and be certain that you use the exact words they do for experience that you have, and the computer will "match" you positively.

4.Make sure your resume is polished!
No matter if it's an entry level job or an executive position, people will think poorly of you if your resume contains errors. Proper grammar and spelling are of utmost importance. Use your word processing software's grammar and spell check, and also have someone else read it over.

5.Personalize your application!
Do a little sleuthing, and find out who the hiring authority for the position is, and a little about the company and what they do. Address your email personally, and focus your email cover letter on how you fit the company's culture or vision for the future. Speak to your interest in the job and the company!

6.Do not be annoying!
There are ways to totally turn off reviewers, and everybody has different pet peeves. Mine is when someone demands I get them this job. (Last I checked, the employer is paying me to find the best available person-maybe it's not you. Now, we can discuss what my fee would be for personal representation.) Other people hate it when someone marks their email "high priority" or acts like they're too good to answer questions that are asked. Keep in mind, these people are doing their job the way their boss wants them to. So be patient.

7. Your attitude is everything!
Be sure that every single interaction you have with an employer is positive and upbeat, including emails and phone conversations. It is true that you can hear a smile in someone's voice over the phone, and people like talking with happy people. Make sure they hear your smile!

8. Tell them WIIFM!
WIIFM means what's in it for me. In other words, what can you do to make their life, and job, easier? What can you do to help the company make, or save money? Address this in your email cover letter, and again when you talk with them by phone.

9. Get their attention, in a good way!
I've seen lots of crazy ideas , (sending a pizza with your resume taped to the top, sticking a post-it on it that gives you the thumbs up) that might get the hiring manager's attention, but....maybe not the right type. But do be proactive. Ask people you know for a personal reference-send those along with your resume and cover letter. If you know people at the company, ask them to personally recommend your work. Another trick is to leave a message on voicemail during the evening, so as not to disturb them during the day. Make it your "elevator pitch" about YOU, how you can benefit the company, and how interested you are in hearing from them to discuss the job.

10. Follow up!
Do not just send your resume in and hope for the best. Follow up with the employer a few days after sending your resume. If you have their number, call them and ask if they need any further information or clarification from you, otherwise, send an email with the same request.

Follow up enthusiastically and be persistent! After all, these are two good traits most employers want.

Six Word Resume

Was reading a post by one of my favorite bloggers (link is here:
http://blogs.jobdig.com/wwds/2008/12/30/the-six-word-resume-contest-its-a-meme/) and had to play along.

So here is my six word resume-- think I can get hired?

Great employee-Diverse background-works cheap

Grace in Small Things 4:365

1. What a pick-me-up for whatever ails you!

Who is happiest to see you when you get home-- your husband/wife, or your dog?

Yell, and your dog will run away and hide. Nobody likes you when you're crabby.

When they're tired, they sleep. When they're hungry, they eat.

When it's nice outside, they don't wanna come in!

You just got out of bed, your breath stinks and your hair is a mess. They think you're beautiful and will even give you a big kiss!

When you are feeling blue, they will lay their head in your lap and let you talk or cry- they know their mere presence soothes you.

I'm not saying go out and take on the responsibility of a new family pet. (Though if you do, please "rescue" one from a shelter if possible. Many have been left homeless along with their people)

I've heard dogs live for the moment. They apparently don't have good memories and can't put situations together, so they live spontaneously. Drop the leash and they'll take off, ears flapping in the breeze, with no sense of consequences.

We could all use some of those ear-flapping, feel good moments ourselves! Spring is here---use it as an opportunity to get out and soak up some fun! (It is totally free.)

Mutiple streams of income......

December 31, 2008—so much to be optimistic about! New Year, new young President who would dig in and fix things for us!
By the time the hangovers were gone, we realized it wasn’t going to be that simple. Opinions differ on how long we’ll be mired in this muck. GM and Chrysler are unstable, AIG and Citigroup are getting by with a little help from friends (ahem) and the unemployment rate is higher than in 20 years.

Which brings me to the point of my blog: Ben Bernanke says this recession will end this year, and I believe him—because I need to for my sanity! So my new mantra is “Until 2010.”

Our family, like most everyone else that I know, has not been untouched by this economy. My husband and son work for the same company, have both had a really long, long winter vacation, and both jobs are still touch and go. I am a third-party Recruiter (Headhunter, if you must say it!) and client orders for new employees are few and far between in times of hiring freezes, layoffs, bankruptcies, and company closures.

How can people survive and thrive in this kind of environment?

This blog will be dedicated to only positive, uplifting ideas—things that can get us though “Until 2010!”

We need to look at these times as life lessons. In looking for ways to diversify our income, I am learning so much about technical things, and even more about myself. You learn how strong you are, and how much you know about countless things. There is no reason to limit yourself to just one “day job.”

Speaking of diversifying your income, there are so many things you can do besides work 9 to 5 to make money. If you have a hobby or interest- have you ever thought about a business in that area? Passion for your work makes it not seem like work!
Craigslist isn’t a great place to look for a job, (too many scams) but it is a good place to look for inspiration. These are all ideas from Craigslist in the last few days:
· Gutter cleaning
· Foreclosure clear-outs
· Interior painting
· Corn hole manufacturer
· Court process server
· Carpet cleaning
· Spring Landscape cleanup
· Photography
· Tutoring
· Pet sitting and dog walking
· Child care
· Running errands for elderly
· Picnic table builder
· Outdoor play structure builder
· Virtual administrative assistant
· Bookkeeping
· Telemarketing from home
· Simple website design
· Typing student papers
· Grant and technical writer
· Hair cutting, coloring, perms, etc.
· Manicures and pedicures
· Massages
· Collections
· Modeling
· Rehab and remodeling projects
· Deck building
· Roofing
· Tree service
· Appointment setting
· Computer repair and virus removal
· Vent cleaning
· Desktop publishing
· Tax preparation
· Housekeeping
· Insulation installation
· Shelving/closet installer
· Flea markets, Craigslist, and Ebay
· Pressure washing
There are very diverse needs in the marketplace. Keep your mind, eyes, and ears open—and where you see a need, fill it.
Politicians are talking about creating jobs, but I’m afraid they’ll all be $8.00 an hour jobs that no one can raise a family on. Think about creating your own job- where you get to decide when and where you work, and how much you get paid:)
